Frequently Asked Questions:
Q. When does wreslting start?
There are two wrestling ‘seasons’ there are different sets of rules for each ‘style’ of wrestling. Folkstyle wrestling (like high school and college) begins in October and runs until December generally. Freestyle / Greco Roman wrestling (like the Olympics) begins in mid January and ends typically the first weekend of May.
Q. Can girls wrestle?
YES! The sport is growing and girls can wrestle, in Idaho female wrestling is limited to wrestling against males. Starting in 2012 Western Idaho Wrestling Association (WIWA) Tournaments will host a womens only freestyle division on Friday night tournaments. However, nationally women compete against other women at the Collegiate and Olympic levels.
Q. How old does my child have to be to participate?
USA Wrestling requires participants be at least 5 yrs old during the year they are competing. Tournaments are broken into age groups (5-6, 7-8, 9-10...) and weight classes (35, 40, 45, 50...). Technically there is no age limit, yes you can still compete! We have had a coach compete at an open tournament, the wrestlers had a great time.
Q. How much does it cost?
Every athlete must have a USAW athlete card, as of January 2012 the cost of the card is $41. The Idaho Rattlers also has fees that are charged per wrestler with discounts for sibling. Financial help is also available, the Idaho Rattlers will not turn away athletes due to financial need. Please contact your age representative for additional information.
